Cataloging CDs

All CDs will now get a location of UMCD. Music and spoken word CDSs will no longer be separated.

Bib record

If available, search by the ISBN number or the publisher number (MARC 028). Note that CDs can vary in format, length and recording technology.

For audiobooks in particular, there can be both abridged and unabridged editions, so you need to verify that the record is an exact match. It is also relatively easy to confuse records for the print version versus the sound version.

  • 020: must match the number on the item

  • 028 (if present):

    • $a must match the number on the item--if it does not match, then do not use the record

    • $b should be the label name or the publisher name

    • The publisher number is sometimes repeated in a 500 note

  • 264: verify publisher information

  • 300:

    • $a will show how many audio discs and length (ex: 5 audio discs (4 hours))

    • $b all compact disc recordings are digital

      • For audiobooks: a lot of the differences in this subfield are unlikely to turn up with audiobooks and do not require verification

      • For music: technical differences mean different editions or recordings--be mindful of terms such as stereo vs. mono, Dolby, etc.

  • Make sure there are subject headings

  • Validate and overlay the record in Folio
