Abbreviations and Jargon

LSP/ILS- Library Services Platform/Integrated Library System.  Mostly interchangeable terms for library enterprise resource platforms.  Provides inventory, tracks circulation, ordering, billing, users, etc.  

FOLIO - backronym for the “Future Of Libraries Is Open”.  The enterprise resource management program used by all 5 Libraries.  It is a shared tenant

FCLC - Five College Librarians Council.  Leadership entity consisting of the library directors and UMass Library Dean

MARC- MAChine Readable Cataloging.  A archaic data serialization format used to store and transmit bibliographic data

FAWG - Five Colleges Acquisitions Working Group.  The Five Colleges Committee overseeing acquisitions

FBLT - Five Colleges Batch loading team. Subgroup of Metadata that coordinates the batch loading of MARC records

LDlite- A reporting platform that pulls data from FOLIO  into a SQL database

EDI - Electronic Data Interchange format.  A data formation used to send and receive orders and invoices

SIG - Special Interest Group. A community interest group in an area of FOLIO

SME - Subject matter expert.  A SIG member who provides expertise

FSE - Ebsco FOLIO services 

FERM - Five Colleges Electronic Resource Management.  The Committee that oversees Electronic resource management at the Five Colleges

ERM - Electronic resource management.  The tracking of eResource we have access to and enabling them for discovery

HLM - Library Holdings Management.  The EBSCO management system for activating some eResources for Discovery

OAI-PMH - Open archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata harvesting.  A standard for exchanging metadata via HTTP

EBSCO - Ebsco Information Services.  Provides hosting and support for FOLIO, sells us EDS, HLM and provides access to some eResources

FCC- Folio Coordinator Committee.  The governing group for FOLIO

Aleph- Our previous library enterprise resource management platform.  

Access Services - The Five Colleges Committee that oversees circulation policies

SRS -  Source Record Storage.  The modules that store MARC records in FOLIO

Repository Collection - A collection of infrequently used materials held in high-density storage across 2 sites

Bunker- A real cold war bunker 

Annex - A modern storage facility in Hatfield

OCLC (number) -  A unique identifier for cataloged material.  This material must come from records stored in the OCLC catalog.  

Effective location - the displayed location of an item based on the hierarchy of locations (priority 1) Item temp 2) item perm 3) holding temp 4) holding perm)

Setae -  Middleware used for spine label printing
