Container Codes

Container Codes

Container codes are an artificial means of collocating sets of bibliographic records in FOLIO Inventory. These codes have a long history in the Five College Consortium. In our previous system, these were used primarily to designate materials acquired through the Yankee Book Peddler, known now as GOBI. That code began with the schools 2 letter prefix followed by ybp and then a unique number as in umybp299840. The prefix of the code is always the same and the unique number following the code allows for a primarily or additional match point for batch processes. In FOLIO, the majority of container codes are used to collocate eResource records.

With the migration to FOLIO, container codes have become almost the only way currently to group bibliographic records into a set of titles. We use these codes for a variety of resources and the reason is always to be able to quickly retrieve the set of records and to provide a unique match point for batch processes.

Container codes are protected fields in our library system. These codes should not be removed, added, or changed unless you’ve been instructed to do so.

Container Code Structure

Container codes are in the MARC field 035 with first indicator 9, second indicator blank, subfield a.

Container codes have an alphanumeric stem in parentheses followed by a number that makes that entire code unique to the resource. The alphanumeric part in parentheses is what allows to search for the set of records in FOLIO.

The alphanumeric part in parentheses is often a code that references the set of records. The first two letters are the institution’s prefix letters. Examples include (UMETD) for UMass’ theses and dissertations, (UMDEGT) for UMass’s Degruter’s eResources set of titles for university publishers, (FCEEBO) for Five College Early English Books Online set of titles.

When you open a bibliographic record in quickMARC, this container code looks:

When previewing the instance record, the contain code looks like this:

Considerations when working with Serials

Serials in the locations UMGEN, USGEN, USPER, UEA, and UNEA are part of our EAST Shared Print Program and 35 serials in UMGEN are also part of the Rosemont Alliance Shared Print Program. Serials in these locations are assigned the following stem respectively:

  • (UMELHR): These are for our EAST serials

  • (UMRLHR): These are for our Rosemont Serials

Note that the Rosemont 35 serial titles are also EAST serials. In other words, these serials are part of both shared serials print programs.

The stem is then followed by the OCLC number.

These container codes are crucial for the automated syncing of our local holdings records with OCLC’s WorldCat holdings records.

If a new serial is being added to FOLIO and in one or more of the locations listed above, then the container code should also be added to the 035  9\$a (UMELHR)OCLC Number.

How to Search in FOLIO when using Container Codes

In FOLIO Inventory, in the Instance, Holdings, or Item segment, enter the stem in parentheses followed by a asterix. Examples include:

  • (UMELHR)*

  • (FCEEBO)*

  • (UMETD)*

  • (UMDEGT)*

List of Contain Codes

For eResources sets, check the UMass Batch Loading Activities Trello Board and the 5C-In Common Electronic Resources for Current Container codes. Codes for other institutions and some FC loads aren’t listed.
